Fic: something worse
Title: something worse
Author: [info]ellixian
Characters: House, Cuddy
Rating: PG-13
Summary: This isn't just anger, though... It's something else, something more.
Concrit: Absolutely.
Disclaimer: I don't make money off this, and all related characters don't belong to me.
A/N: Post-ep for 4x03 97 Seconds. Clearly even a mini-hiatus makes me angsty.

- - - - -

She's been avoiding him for three days now.

On the first day, he celebrated by going home early. Surely it's not his fault if no one else yells at him to do his clinic hours.

The second day he spent hiding from the ridiculously insistent #24 and bothering Wilson, who reminded him every five minutes or so that his left hand wouldn't be burnt purple if he hadn't introduced Tab A (knife) into Slot B (wall socket).

She sends him a new case on the third day. It's straightforward and a waste of his time and she knows it, but every time he's come close to tracking her down, she's spied him and turned on her heel and disappeared in the other direction, or taken corners at a speed he can't possibly match.

Finally, he finds her at the reception counter. She spots him at the exact same moment and practically sprints towards her office.

"No fair running away from the cripple," he calls across the crowded floor.

(Surely it says something about how well she's trained her staff that not one of them bats an eyelid at that.)

"I'm busy, House," she snaps back, not even turning to look at him. "Go play with your new toys. You need to keep all ten of them occupied somehow."

- - - - -

It probably isn't much of a secret that he likes seeing her angry.

He has a theory that people are at their most alive when fury is bleeding like quicksilver through their veins. It's everything - emotion, reaction, hurt and pain, and sure, everyone lies, but anger... anger is honest.

When she's angry, her eyes snap with a fire that reminds him of Michigan, of that day she swore blind she'd prove him wrong and she did, or that night when he'd landed in the infirmary with a bad case of alcohol poisoning and the first thing she did when he regained consciousness was to call him a jackass and punch him in the arm - hard enough to make him wince, because Cuddy punches above her weight like she does everything else.

This isn't just anger, though.

It's something else, something more.

- - - - -

He's taken to stalking the lift lobby.

By mid-day, he wonders if her spies - he knows she has a network of them spread across the hospital, all primed to warn her the moment he thinks of doing something illegal - have told her what he's up to.

But just as he's about to give up and go con Wilson into buying him lunch, the doors to Lift 3 slide open, and she looks up from a file and he supposes he now knows what Cuddy looks like when her heart sinks into the floor.

She starts to stride past him; he blocks her with his cane and his body and he pushes her back into the lift.

"House," she huffs at him angrily, "You can't kidnap me. I have a meeting."

"Don't care," he replies, as the doors close behind them and he hits the button for the top floor. "What are you doing, Cuddy?"

"What do you mean?" she asks, and one day someone really ought to tell her that she's never going to win any prizes for playing dumb.

"Stupid case, which you knew already," he says bluntly. "And you've been avoiding me."

"I've been busy," she frowns, eyes trained studiously on the doors, "Hard as it may be for you to comprehend, House, I run a hospital. Ten departments, not just yours, and it's been one of those weeks. Take a number."

She reaches past him and jabs a button. The lift obligingly shudders to a stop at the next floor.

"You ever going to look me in the eye again?" he asks quietly, as the doors open.

"I'm surprised you noticed," she says as she strides out of the lift. "Most of the time, your eyes are focused somewhere further south."

- - - - -

A day later - he's not one to give up easily - he barges into her room.

"Get out of my office, House," she says automatically.

"Reporting for my scolding," he declares cheerfully.

She's typing furiously, and doesn't even look over when he drops heavily down on the chair opposite hers.

"So what unholy mess do I have to clean up now?" she asks, not missing a beat as she hammers away at her much abused keys.

"No mess," he replies, "Even I can't kill a patient with athlete's foot. But I know you're still mad at me for wasting hospital electricity last week, so have at it. Yell at me. Get it out of your system."

She sighs, a heavy, frustrated sigh, and finally turns to look at him.

It's not just anger, he realises, in a flash.

It's hatred. But not of him. And it's disappointment. But not with him, either.

"What do you want from me, House?" she asks, and he's never heard her sound quite so defeated. "Sympathy? Because I don't care if your hand hurts or if your brain is fried six ways till Thursday. You're the goddamned fool who sent 300 volts through his own heart with a pocket-knife stolen from another idiot with a death wish."

"I don't need sympathy," he replies, truthfully, "and I don't have a death wish. It was a controlled experiment..."

"Semantics," she cuts him off, "and I'm done with all that, House. I'm done enabling you and worrying about you and your health and your department and your drug habit and your leg."

"I never asked you to..."

"I know. I'm saying I'm done. I've had it. There are limits even to my masochism. So from now on, I'm just going to do my job, and stop making foolish assumptions about you living long enough to do yours. Sounds fair to you?"

In all the years he's known her, there's only ever been one other occasion when he's seen Cuddy give up.

It wasn't anything anyone else would have noticed - just a falter, a pause and her hand pressing briefly against her stomach, before she picked up a cup of black coffee in the cafeteria, squared her jaw and her shoulders, and walked out like it hadn't been the hardest thing she'd ever done.

So he does all he can do - he gets out of her office.

- - - - -

The next time he sees her is two days later.

She's standing outside the maternity ward, finishing up one of her rounds, and she looks tired, drained almost grey at the edges.

"Hey," she says, and tries for a smile. It's a valiant attempt, but he's not convinced.

"Hey," he says back, and limps slowly after her as she moves to stand in front of the rows of peaceful, slumbering babies.

It's a ritual for her, he knows, a silent head-count of all the new babies in the ward over the week, and a tally of the ones that might not last the month.

She jerks her chin at the right-hand corner of the room, at a tiny bundle of cloth and pink flesh laced through with clear tubes and wires and machines that still can't prolong the inevitable.

"They named her Carly," she sighs, "and now they're just waiting. Watching her die."

He nods, once, because it's life and it's death and it's pain, and that's how it is.

But he doesn't expect it when she asks him, quietly, as her fingers trace her despair into the plate-glass window, "How many more times do you want me to watch you die, House?"

- - - - -

Another two days later, and she bumps into him on his way out the front door.

She flashes a quick, apologetic smile at him, almost a proper smile this time, and he thinks, it's been ten days.

At least she looks like she's had some sleep in the last twenty-four hours.

He gets news from Wilson now, who has started to bring her coffee every afternoon and who told him that she hasn't really been able to sleep much since the day a crash cart was called for House, Gregory, for the third time.

"Not going home yet?" he asks gruffly, and she shakes her head.

"The litigation never ends," she shrugs, "your patient from two weeks ago has family after all. We're trying to settle."

"Thirteen told me," he replies, and clears his throat before he adds, "I might deign to talk to our lawyers. If it could help. And if it doesn't interfere with General Hospital."

Tilting her head to one side, she studies him. "Thank you," she says simply.

And she smiles.

Ten days
, he thinks. It's been too long.

- - - - -

He raps sharply on her door with his cane, a cup of steaming coffee in his good hand, and limps into her room.

"Morning, starshine," he says, as she removes her coat and hangs it on the stand. "Looks like I beat you into work today."

"It's two in the afternoon," she points out, "and I had a meeting. Nice of you to knock though. For once."

"I do observe social niceties on occasion," he replies dryly, before he takes a deep swallow of bitter coffee and almost chokes on the lack of sugar.

"Seriously, House," she says as she hurries over to thump him on the back. "Try not to die on me again, okay?"

"I'll do my best," he assures her, as he takes another quick swig of coffee to soothe his throat.

"So, to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"

"Afternoon delight?" he asks, trying his luck.

She rolls her eyes.

"Fine, be that way," he says, then holds the coffee cup out to her. "Wilson had a patient. So I brought you coffee."

She arches an eyebrow at him. "That's an unusually nice thought, House, but you already drank half of it."

"I know," he replies, "which makes me sorrier than I can say, Cuddy."

She looks up at him, sharply.

He's sure she knows that this is as close to an apology as she's ever going to get.

She reaches for the cup, fingers brushing against his, and takes a sip.

"Black, no sugar," he assures her. "The way you like it."

"I know," she smiles, "I figure that's why you choked on it."

This was wonderful. And played on the exact thing I loved about this episode; the fact that House truly doesn't know how to deal with Cuddy when she's not yelling at him, but is instead truly disappointed. So this was such a lovely read, with a lovely ending. I was glad to see them back on track again.
ellixian[info]ellixian on October 15th, 2007 12:50 am (UTC)
I'm really really glad this worked for you - much as I loved the first two awesomely cute scenes we got in 4x03 between House and Cuddy, the last brief scene just ripped me up inside. And I knew we weren't going to get anything on the show that REALLY addressed Cuddy's feelings about House dying on her AGAIN, so had to do a little work of my own there... ;) The lack of Angry!Cuddy was interesting to write, mostly because her default mode with House is almost always with the yelling (which they both get off on, but what happens when they don't argue anymore?).

Thanks much for the comment!
leaveout[info]leaveout on October 14th, 2007 07:19 pm (UTC)
This was good, during that last scene with Cuddy she just seemed truly disgusted and disappointed in House. I can't remember the last time I saw her like that. Anyway, good fic.
ellixian: lisa[info]ellixian on October 15th, 2007 12:51 am (UTC)
I'm glad you liked - and if I were Cuddy, I'd certainly be disgusted and disappointed with both House and myself, for putting up with him for so long. Glad that came through in this one. Thanks for reading!
fanohugh[info]fanohugh on October 14th, 2007 07:55 pm (UTC)
Loved this story. I do so enjoy it when House knows he's not in Cuddy's good graces, and can't wait to make it right again. Good job!

Yes! Another Angry!Cuddy post-97 Seconds fic! Love these. And yours is excellent. That one little scene from Cuddy at the end of was just enough to tell us everything about her and you played off it quite well.

I love fics that have Cuddy at her limit, about to give up on House. I've always wondered how far he will go before he does push it to the breaking point. My favorite part was the part where she tells him she's done with him (I totally cheered her on) and the part where she asks him how many times he's going to let her watch him die on her (and my heart broke here). Beautiful.

Oh, argh, you know, I'm so awful for forgetting but I was going to post feedback on YOUR post-97 Seconds fic. Give me, like, ten minutes to do that. Your story partly inspired mine, I must admit, but I forgot to comment to that effect when I got all excited with the writing. *rolls eyes at myself*

In other news, I'm glad this worked for you - I wonder, too, how much strength this one woman must have to deal with House ALL THE TIME and yet never give up on him. Because she's a tenacious pitbull, as we've already seen, but surely even pitbulls get tired??

Thanks so much for reading. And, BTW, awesome icon, man. I love that scene from 4x02 in a million ways. My favourite of the season so far.

Nicole: Do you like me[info]shikabane_mai on October 14th, 2007 09:30 pm (UTC)
*sigh* I would have wanted this to happen on the show or something because I believe this is how Cuddy truly felt. Therefore, I absolutely adore this line: "How many more times do you want me to watch you die, House?"

I love angst fics that involve where Cuddy can't take it anymore because of House. How much will he push before she breaks?

A truly beautiful piece. :)

You're such a sweetheart for commenting twice, Shika. Hee. And I'm glad you liked - clearly I needed to get a little angst out of my system, since I don't think TPTB are going to bother showing the emotional aftermath for Cuddy on the show. (Hello, that whole perjury thing? GONE, just like that!)

Thanks for the double comments, hon!

Oh, I love this. *Wonderful* post-ep fic. That scene at the end of '97 seconds' is my favourite Cuddy moment so far this season.
ellixian: lisa[info]ellixian on October 15th, 2007 01:01 am (UTC)
Yay, so pleased it worked for you! Agree with you that that Cuddy scene at the end is one of my favourites this season - it just killed me, is basically what it did, because LE totally sold it, and made it so obvious just how much more Cuddy had to say to House but didn't.

Thanks for reading!

ellixian[info]ellixian on October 15th, 2007 01:09 am (UTC)
That's one of my favourite lines too - I do think one thing about House and Cuddy's relationship is how genuine it is, and a lot of it is because she's mad at him half the time! ;)

Lovely. I felt like something had broken for Cuddy by the end of the episode, and House trying to make up for that...in House's way, of course...is a great image.
ellixian: reading[info]ellixian on October 15th, 2007 01:17 am (UTC)
I absolutely agree, of course - I definitely think Cuddy was more broken than she let on in that final scene (as always, LE played it perfectly, with more emotion than is suggested in the script, I suspect), and I couldn't just let that be.
Thanks for reading!
logophobia12[info]logophobia12 on October 15th, 2007 01:12 am (UTC)
Yeah, I agree with [info]operaticingenue above - this line, "It's everything - emotion, reaction, hurt and pain, and sure, everyone lies, but anger... anger is honest."

Gorgeous. Lovely fic.
ellixian[info]ellixian on October 15th, 2007 01:25 am (UTC)
Glad that line worked for you as well - I do think that the reason House enjoys sparring with Cuddy so much is because anger, which is so honest when it's true, he can do something with. Anything else? Emotional minefield he's not quite ready to enter.

Thanks for the comment!

Wonderfully done. It's thrilling to see a writer with such a great handle on Cuddy as a person and as House's boss (and friend). Thanks for a reassuring ending to a sad, sad episode. Definitely worth the "trip" from HHOW. :D

Thanks for the read! (And luv your icon, BTW)

Cuddy's had more screentime lately, but even then her character isn't explored half as much as it should be on the show - so I'm very glad to know the Cuddy voice in this worked for you.

This was wonderful my dear. You really got them both spot on and I loved it. Perfect add on to the ending of the episode. :)

This line basically killed me (in a good way):

"How many more times do you want me to watch you die, House?"

Overall, brilliant job. <3 <3 <3

SLAP BET COMMISSIONER: house // house/cuddy // strut[info]goddesspharo on October 15th, 2007 02:18 pm (UTC)
Lovely fic! I liked Cuddy's line asking House how many more times he wants her to watch him die. It reminded me of Death Cab For Cutie's What Sarah Said: I'm thinking of what Sarah said/ that love is watching someone die/ so who's gonna watch you die?

I also liked that Cuddy's lack of punishment and screaming and clinic hours is more effective in telling House how Cuddy feels than when she piles five clinic hours on him and takes away GH privileges. At least when she's actively showing him that she's disappointed, he can snark back and they can do that brilliant dance, but you can't tango when your partner is nowhere to be found.
ellixian: reading[info]ellixian on October 15th, 2007 05:10 pm (UTC)
Haven't heard that Death Cab song, but that's an awesome lyric - thanks for sharing. Now I totally have to go download that song. ;)

I definitely think that House will be more flummoxed by a Cuddy who doesn't punish or nag or bug him for clinic hours - the anger he seems to love provoking in her is something he recognises, that he knows and enjoys, you know? The dance metaphor you mention is just perfect in this instance.

Thanks so much for reading, and the comment! :)

The fic is wonderful! I especially enjoyed the final "coffee" scene, it was so... touching, can't even eŃ…plain why. interesting to see House completely unprepared for Cuddy's unusual reaction - that's actually what I'd like to see more on the show.
Thank you and looking forward to your new stories!

I liked this. I'm...not exactly sure what I liked about it, but I did. House's awkwardness and confusion in the face of this 'new' Cuddy is endearing.

I like to think that she's finally trying to distance herself in the hope that when something else happens to him, she won't be quite so affected. I don't think she'll succeed, though. *shakes head*

He's too much a part of her.
ellixian: 3[info]ellixian on October 16th, 2007 12:05 am (UTC)
Absolutely agreed - he's too much a part of her for Cuddy to have a hope in hell of distancing herself from him, but that won't stop her trying. In my fanwank world, that's why she thinks he's dangerous: if she lets herself get anywhere with the unsafe choice, as it were, she knows how much more it will hurt when he does insane stuff like this, which she'll never be able to stop him doing anyway.

If that made sense...?

I think it's so true that House doesn't know what to do with an apparent non-reaction from Cuddy. It messes with his world. And I've often wondered at what point would Cuddy shut down? How far does she let House push her before she says enough, and means it? IMO, Cuddy looked so drained in that last scene with House that this fic works great as a follow up to the ep. Thanks for sharing :-)
ellixian: 3[info]ellixian on October 16th, 2007 09:39 am (UTC)
Re House and a non-reaction from Cuddy - exactly! He takes such delight in provoking her, knowing that she can push right back and give as good as she gets. I don't think he'll really know how to deal with it if she DOES stop pushing back one day. And for Cuddy, I always wondered what keeps her hanging on, over and above all the other characters who have at some point just thrown in the towel on House, even Stacy and Wilson. She looked too broken at the end of 4x03 for there to be no emotional resolution re her having had to watch House die for the third time.

BTW, if not already clear, I love your H/Cu/W writing - you nail their dynamic so well - which makes me even gladder that this worked for you. Thanks for reading, and the comment. :)
the shape of his insomniac heart: house | let's deny past transgressions[info]oursoliloquies on October 17th, 2007 09:08 am (UTC)
It's amazing how you build this up so subtly and yet so effectively. Very powerful, in a beautifully understated way— I think it brings out the darker side to their relationship very well. Because I feel that House needs reactions from people to keep him going most times, but the way you illustrate Cuddy here shows how he's still somewhat uncomfortable with her apparent detachment. Lovely work.
ellixian: reading[info]ellixian on October 17th, 2007 04:09 pm (UTC)
Very pleased indeed to know that the build-up worked for you - given how defeated Cuddy looked in that last scene, I didn't think an explosive confrontation between House and Cuddy would resolve this, you know? Figured it would work better if it was a fraying at the edges of their relationship that drives House madder than if she'd simply screamed at him and gotten it out of her system that way. If that makes sense.
Thanks so much for reading, and the comment! Much appreciated. :)

Coming over here from the HHOW rec and I am thrilled that I did. This excellent story portrays in delicate capsule form the tension and tradgedy of House and Cuddy at the present moment. I think that canon season four will progress in somewhat the fashion that you have presented in your wonderfully constructed and moving fic. As you have so skillfully shown it, neither House nor Cuddy can bear the poison of the anger and disappointment that currently infects their relationship. Brava for a lovely and touching story.

So glad that you ventured over here from HHOW and that you enjoyed this - there was just so much unsaid in that final scene between House and Cuddy, even though having her look at him was just heartbreaking. I couldn't bear not having that addressed, somehow. And yes, I do hope that canon season 4 goes some way towards addressing this anger and disappointment in their relationship, something beyond her just bugging him to do his job and not be completely irresponsible while he picks his new ducklings.

Thanks so much for reading, and for the comment!

This was amazing. I'm so glad I found you! Your writing is incredible and you capture them absolutely perfectly.

"just a falter, a pause and her hand pressing briefly against her stomach, before she picked up a cup of black coffee in the cafeteria, squared her jaw and her shoulders, and walked out like it hadn't been the hardest thing she'd ever done." That almost killed me. It was... just... wow. Incredible.

And the ending was perfect. Loved this fic. You rock.

Awww! *blushes* Such high praise - thank you so much, seriously. I'm just glad to know that the fic worked for you, and that I didn't screw House and Cuddy up too much by taking them out of the House writers' hands for a bit! ;)
You picked one of my favourite lines too - I remain SO upset with the show for dropping the babyarc as they've done, especially since it's so unlike House not to find out what's up with Cuddy on the baby-making thing. So I snuck that line in, to prove that House DID notice that she'd stopped trying, but that even House knows when to back off because Cuddy's hurting too much for him to snark at her.

If that makes sense. Um.

Thanks again! Off to friend you back now. :)
